James VI, fourth coinage, Forty Shillings (official weight 471.16grs., 0.916 fine), 29.72g., 1582, crowned half length figure of king in elaborate armour holding sword to left, rev. crowned shield, i to left and r to right, mark of value xl s below, honor regis ivdicivm diligit (B.1, fig.931; S.5486), wear to kings chest and head, weak in places on reverse legend but bold shield and crown, good fine/about very fine, one of the great rarities of the Scottish coinage Estimate £ 4,500-5,500 provenance H M Lingford, Glendining, 20 June 1951, lot 1155 H B Lorimer, collection purchased by Spink, 1960 N Asherson, collection purchased by Spink, 1967 Dundee, Spink/Bowers and Ruddy, 19 February 1976, lot 255 Spink auction 161, 14 November 2002, lot 143 There are believed to be eleven examples known of this coin, of which five are in museum collections. The last example to appear at auction was the LaRiviere example in March 2006, probably the finest known, which realised £23,000.
