x CANADA Campaign, Expedition and Military Mail The Second Riel Rebellion, 1884-85 Lithographed essay in red-brown, bi-lingually inscribed "republique canadienne/canada republic" and showing the head of Liberty at centre. Rare with Robson Lowe recording only six examples. Photo Estimate £ 500-600 Note: Led by Louis Riel, the Metlis rebelled for a second time in 1884. A provisional government was established on the Saskatchewan River. The revolt was crushed by a force of federal troops and militia, led by General F. Middleton, in 1885. Riel was hanged in November 1885. This essay is believed to have been produced by the rebel government, printed from a wood-cut at "The Nor-Wester" of Winnipeg
