x CANADA Registration Stamps Eight Cents Cover 1876 (9 Nov.) envelope from Galt, C.W. to Scotland carried on the Allan Packet Steamer "Circassian" from Quebec (11.11), bearing 8c. dull blue and Small Queen perf. 11 1/2x12 5c. olive-green both indistinctly cancelled with portions of target and cork obliterators and showing "registered" h.s. and despatch c.d.s., and "registered" h.s. and "Crown/registered" h.s. in red, the reverse with Hamilton c.d.s. (10.11), Liverpool Registered oval d.s. (26.11) in red and Canonbie (27.11) c.d.s.; the 8c. with a small tear at top though a very rare stamp on cover and one of the finest of the few recorded used in the correct period. Photo Estimate £ 5,000-6,000 Note: In Arfken´s "Small Queen Era" handbook he records only seventeen examples used in the correct period before the registration rate was reduced to 5c. on 1 January 1878.
