x CANADA The Small Queen Issue Three Cents Red Montreal and Ottawa Printings, Perforated 12 Covers 1872 (c.) U.S. 3c. green envelope, uprated with 3c. deep rose-red on thick, soft paper, "Via Victoria" to Cariboo, British Columbia, sharing a good strike of the oval-framed "barnard´s/cariboo/express" h.s., showing manuscript "Coll 10c", deleted and replaced with oval-framed "collect" followed by manuscript "50c." in blue crayon, Chinese characters written at right of address suggesting that the addressee may have been a worker at the gold mines; the envelope a fraction soiled and with small portion of upper left corner torn away, nevertheless a scarce Express franking carried entirely outside of the Canadian mail service. Photo Estimate £ 1,500-2,000 Note: Francis J. Barnard started his express in 1860 - Yale to the Cariboo, a 760 mile round trip on foot. In 1863 he formed "Barnard´s Cariboo Express" between Yale and the Cariboo Mines. Over the next 15 years Dietz & Nelson, and Gerow & Johnson were absorbed.
