x USA New York Postmaster´s Provisional. — 5c. black, a superb appearing example with four even margins, initialled ´A.C.M.´ in red, on 1846 cover endorsed "per Cumbria via Boston & Liverpool" to Chaux Des Fonds/Switzerland, framed "colonies/&c. art 13" applied in London with red c.d.s. on reverse (13/8); the adhesive being tied by red French transit datestamp. Addressee´s name erased, nevertheless a wonderful and very rare franking, Stanley Piller´s ´New York Postmaster´s Provisional´ handbook records just 3 such covers to Switzerland. Scott 9X1, $6,000+.
