Hollingworth, Royal Army Service Corps, Who Was Taken Prisoner of War, 24.5.1940 1939-1945 Star; War Medal, extremely fine, with four R.A.O.B. medals, gilt and silver, all engraved to recipient, two as a Brother of the Clwydian Lodge, also with Certificates from the R.A.O.B.; Campaign Medal enclosure slip; Soldiers´ Service and Pay Book; Soldiers´ Release Book; two Army Certificates of Education, 2nd and 3rd Class respectively, letter from the Army Pensions Officer; National Identity Card; leather diary embossed ´Stalag XXA´ with entries from his time there; photographs; Driver´s Licence and other ephemera Four: Lance Corporal S. Hollingworth, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Killed in Action on a Mission to Cologne, 2.7.1941 1939-1945 Star; Air Crew Europe Star; War Medal, extremely fine, with original card box if issue addressed to recipient´s mother ´Mrs. E. Hollingworth´, named condolence slip, two portrait photographs, one signed by the recipient (lot) Estimate £ 380-420 15731 Private Samuel Hollingworth, born Rhyl, Wales, 1881; served during the Great War with the 10th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers in the French Theatre of War from, 27.9.1915, and was killed in action on the Western Front 19.2.1916; he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. His Brother 15197 Private E. Hollingworth also served with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and was also killed in action on the Western Front, 13.11.1916. M/17241 Coporal James Hollingworth, born Rhyl, Wales, 1902; enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps, 28.1.1920 and saw service in India and Malta before Second War service; captured at Boulougne, 24.5.1940 and imprisoned in Stalag XXA Thorn, Poland, 17.6.1940 - 17.6.1944 before moving to Camp 357, 18.6.1944-2.5.1945; Hollingworth´s diary shows that he had a pretty rough time of it as a P.O.W. suffering from various physical ailments as well as having to go through a divorce, he also had to take part in a forced march (from 7.4.1945) as the Russians approached the camp, ´started walking.... evacuate POW camp as Russians approached.... still walking, very weak..... strafed by planes..... Len killed.... still no bread... covered 131 miles... Released 1 am Hemsdorf´ (Diary refers). James Hollingworth was the son of 15731 Private Samuel Hollingworth. 2326061 Lance Corporal Samuel Hollingwoth, born 1908; enlisted Royal Corps of Signals, 17.6.1936; transferred to Army Reserve 22.8.1946. Samuel Hollingworth was the son of 15731 Private Samuel Hollingworth. 968358 Sergeant John French Hollingworth, born 12.4.1918 (7 weeks after his father 15731 Private Samuel Hollingworth was killed in action); served during the Second World War as a Sergeant Wireless Operator/Air Gunner with 78 Squadron, and on 2.7.1941was flying in Whitley Z6558 EY piloted by Sergeant A. Jepson on a mission for Cologne, ´T/O 2324 Middleton St. George. Shot down by a night fighter (Lt. Reinhold Knacke, II/NJG1) and crashed 0103 at Iteren (Limburg), 5km N. of Maastricht, Holland´ (Bomber Command Losses of the Second World War refers); all the crew were killed in action and are buried in the Jonkerbos War Cemetery.
