A 1916 ´Somme´ Casualty Pair to Private W.A. Watkins, Gloucestershire Regiment British War and Victory Medals (24270 Pte. W.A. Watkins. Glouc. R.), very fine or better, with regimental cap badge, back badge and shoulder title, and a photographic image of recipient (2) Estimate £ 60-80 24270 Private Wilfred Adolphus Watkins, born Charlton Kings, ´he enlisted in the 8th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment in the town at the outbreak of war. He went to France to join his unit which was serving in the Somme sector October 1916. Towards the end of that month, the 8th Battalion took over front line sections in Hessian Trench and Stuff Redoubt in front of Thiepval and overlooking Grandcourt which was to be the subject of an attack in November. During the night of the 25th-26th October, the Germans made a heavy attack here, following an artillery bombardment, but were successfully beaten off. It was in this action that Private Watkins was killed. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.´ (Leaving All That Was Dear, refers).
