A.S.C.); Mercantile Marine War Medal (Walter R. Ridgers); Victory Medal (A-362979 Pte. W.R. Ridgers. A.S.C.); 1939-1945 Star; Africa Star; War Medal; Africa Service Medal, the last four medals all officially named (P68 W.R. Ridgers); Permanent Forces of the Empire Beyond the Seas Long Service & G.C., G.V.R. (No. 68 Air Sgt. W.R. Ridgers, S.A.A.F.), Stars gilded, good very fine or better, mounted as originally worn, with the associated miniature awards, and a portrait photograph (8) Estimate £ 380-420 Awarded the King´s Commendation S.A. (Protea Emblem) 15.6.1945, ´Commended for valuable services rendered in connection with the War.´ Major Walter Radcliffe Ridgers (1897-1962), born Wimbledon, London; served during the Great War as an Artificer with the Merchant Navy in the Dardanelles, 4.8.1914-27.3.1916; served with the 2nd Battalion Middlesex Regiment, 28.3.1916-27.9.1919; after the war Ridgers attested as an Air Mechanic South African Air Force (Permanent Forces), 28.8.1921; posted 1 Squadron, 2.8.1922; Air Corporal 1.9.1923; Air Sergeant 1.7.1927; as a promising Engineer he was sent back to England on two separate occasions to receive instruction on the Bristol and Siddeley Cooled Engines (1926) and with the Rolls Royce Company (1935) both in conjunction with new engines to be used by the S.A.A.F.; received L.S. & G.C. 27.3.1936; Temporary Lieutenant 1.5.1940; Temporary Captain, Engineering Section S.A.A.F., 11.8.1941; Second War service included in the Middle East, from 19.4.1942, and serving with 3 S.A. Wing, from 31.5.1942; wounded in action 17.7.1942; Major 1,4,1943; Officer Commanding 16 A.A.E.D. (S.A.A.F.), from 8.7.1946; retired 3.11.1952.
