London Gazette 12.7.1920 338009 Flight Sergeant William Henry Cheffins (Somaliland) Flight Sergeant William Henry Cheffins, M.S.M., served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment on the Western Front from, 13.8.1914; transferred Royal Air Force and served as a Flight Sergeant with "Z" Flight in Somaliland in the campaign against the ´Mad Mullah´, from January 1920; "Z" Flight, the R.A.F. Contingent in Somaliland under the command of Group Captain R. Gordon, consisted of 36 officers and 189 other ranks, of which 4 officers and 25 other ranks formed the Medical Section; the flight was equipped with 11 De Havilland 9A aeroplanes and one DH9 which was fitted as an aerial ambulance; Eil Dor Elan was the main advanced aerodrome with smaller landing grounds at Las Khorai and Eil Dab, with "Z" Flight flying operations including the bombing of Medishe, Jidbali and Eil Apweina; awarded L.S. & G.C., 5.8.1925. 1 of 10 R.A.F. M.S.M.´s awarded for Somaliland 1920.
