Four: Sergeant W.H. Hall, 3rd Dragoon Guards, Late 6th Dragoon Guards Queen´s South Africa 1899-1902, four clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1902 (4522 Pte. W.H. Hall 6th Dragoon Gds.), minor edge bruise; 1914 Star, with Bar (4491 Sjt. H.(sic) Hall. 3/D.Gds.); British War and Victory Medals (D-4491 Sjt. W.H. Hall. 3-D. Gds.), otherwise nearly extremely fine or better, with photographic image of recipient (4) Estimate £ 220-250 4491 Sergeant William Henry Hall, born Cheltenham, was a regular soldier, having fought in the Boer War, and was serving with his regiment in Cairo on the outbreak of the Great War. He sailed with his regiment to France, arriving 31.10.1914, and immediately went into action in the Ypres section. He moved into the trenches on the Eastern side of the Zillebeke-Kleinzillebeke Road on the 15th November, ´on 9am on the 17th very heavy continuous gun fire was brought to bear on all the trenches and the whole area was subject to a terrific shelling.... At 1pm the Germans attacked my line on the right and centre (A Sqn 3Dg and B Sqn N. Somerset Yeo.) coming on to within 20 yards or so of the trenches. This attacked was repulsed with heavy loss to the enemy..... gun fire again broke out in great intensity and about 3.45pm another attack developed this chiefly against the left.... defended by C Sqn 3 DGds who suffered heavily in the loss of Officers and men´ (O.C. 3rd Dragoon Guards report for the action, refers). Over the course of 48 hours the 3rd Dragoon Guards had suffered 11 killed and 41 wounded. Hall was killed in action, 17.11.1914, and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
