Slack Notts & Derby R), last two medals renamed, very fine, with Divisional Commander´s Commendation, dated 11.7.1916, signed Major-General C. Ross, and a hand written letter of recommendation from Slack´s Commanding Officer, Lieutenant-Colonel T.W. Daniel, O.C. 10th Bn. Sherwood Foresters, dated 3.9.1919 (5) Estimate £ 1,700-1,900 D.C.M. London Gazette 16.1.1919 11366 Pte. C. Slack, M.M., 10th Bn., Notts and Derby R. (Chesterfield). ´For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Gauche Wood on 18th September, 1918. While in charge of a signal station during a counter-attack by the enemy, he saw that a platoon, having lost both its officers and sergeant, was giving way. He at once rushed across the open and took command, rallying them and organising a bombing squad to form a block in the trench, first checked, and then drove the enemy back some distance. Two machine guns were captured, and his prompt initiative in a critical situation was of the utmost service.´ M.M. London Gazette 22.1.1917 11366 Pte. C. Slack, 2nd Bn. Notts. & Derby. R. ´For gallantry and devotion to duty at Montauban on 16th October 1916, when during a very heavy enemy bombardment he consistently followed his telephone wires from a shallow trench repairing breaks, by which action he maintained communications between the front line and Battalion Headquarters´ M.M. Second Award Bar London Gazette 26.5.1917 1366 L./C. C. Slack, 17th Bn. Notts. & Derby. R. ´For gallantry and devotion to duty during the enemy bombardment in the front line and Maple Copse on 9th April 1917. Private Slack went out alone on two occasions and repaired the telephone wire to the front line under heavy shell and machine gun fire thereby re-establishing communication from the front line and Battalion Headquarters.´ 11366 Sergeant Charles Slack, D.C.M., M.M., served during the Great War with the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment on the Western Front from, 8.9.1914, ´Sgt. C. Slack served in my battalion since Sept 1918, during which period his work was always of the highest order. Always willing and temperate, he could be trusted to carry out any task which was given him. In action he was the bravest man I ever saw.
