A Royal Engineers Presentation Sword of the Royal Military Academy With 32 3/4in. slightly-curved fullered blade by Henry Wilkinson (No 21314 indicating date 1875) etched with foliate decoration, VR cypher and inscription PRESENTED TO GENTLEMAN CADET JAMES H COWAN ON OBTAINING HIS COMMISSION FROM THE ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY FOR HIS EXEMPLARY CONDUCT AT THE INSTITUTION AUGUST 1876, with Royal Engineers special 1857 Pattern gunmetal guard with honeysuckle decoration, wire-bound fishskin grip and steel scabbard; together with a photocopy extract from the Wilkinson order-book and notes on the career of James Cowan, both at Woolwich and subsequently.

Note: Cowan´s military career lasted from 1876 to 1918. He retired as Assistant Director of Fortifications and Works, being awarded the CB.
