An Orange Free State Artillery Sabre Of Prussian manufacture, with narrow 32 1/4in. slightly-curved fullered blade, etched with copious foliate decoration, the cartouche of the OFS and motto VRYHEID, GEDULD EN MOED (Freedom, Patience and Valour), and another cartouche with initials PBR (President Brand Rifles), maker´s name (C Wulferth, Hoflieferant, Berlin) inscribed on top of blade, with brass stirrup hilt, the langet cast with crossed gun-barrels on one side (two small holes now drilled in it), ridged fishskin grip, backstrap with ears, terminating in a "half-jaw" lion´s head pommel; in its steel scabbard with brass bands (suspension rings missing) See illustration Note: This weapon is stated to have been taken at the surrender of the Boer army at Paardeburg, by an officer of the Royal Artillery.
