South Africa 1834-53 (Lieut R.H.H. Jary. 12th Lancers), suspension re-affixed, naming heavily impressed overall, very fine Estimate £ 450-500 Major Robert Herbert Heath Jary, commissioned Cornet 12th Lancers, 1849; Lieutenant 1851; served with the Regiment during the Third Kaffir War (4.12.1850-6.2.1853), ´In those days of course we had no vets, nobody knew anything about horses, so I was told to act as vet.´ (Article included in lot refers); a contemporary of the then Duke of Cambridge, Jary went onto see further service, ´The Regiment, or Major Jary at any rate, was going out to the Crimea. Some of the lads landed at Gibraltar and after a jovial evening were going down on the docks to go on board. Suddenly a dago rushed at Major Jary and tried to stab him; one of the party seized the man by the wrist and took his dagger away. "And what did you do to him?" asked I innocently. "Frog marched him to the boat, rowed him a mile out to sea and threw him overboard; don´t know whether he could swim or not", roared Major Jary.´ (Article included in lot refers); Captain 1855; served in the Crimea from, 9.5.1855, including the Siege of Sebastopol (entitled to Medal and clasp and Turkish Crimea); retired Major 1862.
