Moore, Royal Flying Corps and York and Lancaster Regiment, Killed on Action on a Patrol During a Zeppelin Raid, 1917 Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque ´Cuthbert Alec Moore´, good very fine, in original card envelope, with portrait photograph of recipient and copy of correspondence surrounding his death Estimate £ 120-140 Second Lieutenant Cuthbert Alec Moore, born U.S.A., 1897; native of Knightsbridge, London; served during the Great War in the ranks, Artists Rifles, 15.8.1915-21.11.1916 and served in the French Theatre of War from 4.3.1916; appointed to commission of Temporary Second Lieutenant 14th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, 2.12.1916 and subsequently volunteered for service with the Royal Flying Corps; qualified as an Observer 14.7.1917 and was posted to 36 Squadron, Seatons Carew; in the early hours of 25.9.1917 Moore took off in Fe2d A6461 piloted by Second Lieutenant H.J. Thornton on a patrol during a Zeppelin raid, ´No trace was found of the No. 36 Squadron F.E.2d crewed by Thornton and Moore, believed to have run out of petrol while trying to regain the coast after chasing a zeppelin far out to sea´ (Air Defence of Great Britain, refers); Moore was listed as killed in action and is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial.
