Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque ´John Ralph Bax Barwell´, good very fine, with framed miniature portrait of recipient in uniform, 80mm x 95mm, by Edith Alice Maitland, 1917 Estimate £ 120-150 Lieutenant John Ralph Bax Farwell, born Cheltenham, ´he was a regular Royal Navy Officer who received his promotion to Lieutenant in August 1914 when serving on the light cruiser H.M.S. Yarmouth. He joined H.M.S. Bonaventure as 1st Lieutenant in submarine C-16 on the 4th February 1915 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Biggs. In April he was posted to H.M.S. Hebe, 6th Submarine Flotilla on the river Humber and in August joined H.M.S. Maidstone of the 8th Submarine Flotilla at Harwich, being on board submarine E-60, again under the command of Lieutenant Commander Biggs. He later served in the 11th and 9th Submarine flotillas and was on E-30 in [22nd] November 1916 when that vessel was lost at sea with all hands. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.´ (Leaving All That Was Dear, refers). E-30 left Harwich on the 15th November and sunk in the North Sea, possibly due to a mine of Orford Ness. The minefield was not located until 25th November.
