1897 New Currency Surcharges Small Figures Surcharge on Dowager First Print 1c. on 1ca. pale vermilion variety inverted surcharge, setting A, left pane [8] and forms a pair with the previous lot, unused with only traces of gum, light even toning, very scarce. Signed J.R. Hughes and with small "sr" handstamp. Photo Estimate HK$ 40,000-50,000provenance: James Senior, October 1971 We record ten unused and thirty-seven used examples from three sheets of forty. The used examples bear Hankow cancellations and those dated are June, July and November 1897. It looks as though they were commercially used, so many will have been lost
