China British Post Office I.P.O. Tieprints Shanhaikwan: 1899 (6 Sep.) "on railway service" envelope (opened-out) addressed to Surrey bearing C.I.P. 5c. pair and 10c. pair tied by Shanhaikwan tombstone, a further strike on reverse with manuscript date added, used with Hong Kong 10c. purple on red with Tientsin type 1 "I.P.O." tieprint and Shanghai c.d.s., Tientsin bilingual c.d.s. and two type of large "R" ; the reverse with bilingual registered handstamp with manuscript endorsement. Some light soiling as to be expected from a large cover and with original 3-page enclosure on Imperial Chinese Railways paper, written by an English railway engineer from Chung Ho So, some 200 mile north of Tientsin and makes very interesting reading about conditions at the time on the railway.
