Auction: 7001 - Fine Stamps & Covers of Hong Kong
Lot: 707
China 1898 Chinese Imperial Post $5 deep green and salmon Waterlow file sheet of forty-seven (missing [43]), the seventh vertical row is without the Yin-Yang watermark; each stamp with the security punch hole and the sheet annotated in the top margin "196410/15.10.97/50,0000". This is in unusually fine condition for one of these file sheets and is unique in this format. Holcombe Certificate (1994). Photo Estimate HK$ 30,000-40,000The existance of the above watermark error can be explained by the fact that some of the high denomination stamps were printed on remnants of paper which was used for printing the low demonination stamps. They were printed in large sheets containing panes of twenty-five stamps, the watermark arranged to fit these panes, leaving the interpanneau margin without watermark. These high value stamps were printed in sheets of forty-eight so, occasionally, one row was entirely without watermark.
