China Postal History Customs Post mengtzu: 1892 (17 June) double-rate, blue envelope addressed to Oxford bearing pair of French Colonies 25c. tied by "lao-kai/tonkin" c.d.s., the reverse bears a very fine strike of the "customs/mengtzu" c.d.s. with Ha-Noi, Hai-Phong, Hong Kong and Oxford c.d.s.; a few age faults but with long, 14 page, original letter. The lot also includes a great deal of background information on mail from Mengtzu. This is likely to be the earliest recorded date of use of this Customs dater and possibly the only double rated cover. Photo Estimate HK$ 15,000-20,000Richard Pratt records that the Post Office was opened in August 1893 and the earliest cover seen by him was dated September 1895.
