Hong Kong 1898 Surcharge Without Chinese Characters $1 on 96c. drab, large part original gum; light gum toning which has not affected the shade of this stamp. With an example bearing Chinese handstamp in the same colour, cancelled by Hong Kong c.d.s. Scarce in this colour. Photo Estimate HK$ 10,000-12,000 The colour of this stamp is very close to the 1885 printing of $1 on 96c. grey-olive, but not quite as dark. This is a recognised variation which was reported in the HKSC bulletins 212 and 214.
