Hong Kong 1898 Without Chinese Characters Second Printing: 10c. on 30c. grey-green [12] showing mark I widely spaced "1 0" variety, large part original gum; small part hinge remainders, fresh and an important rarity. R.P.S. Certificate (1993). S.G. 54a, £3750. Photo Estimate HK$ 40,000-50,000Believed to have been first reported in 1908 by Bertram W.H. Poole, this very elusive variety was not included in any auction of important Hong Kong collections. This variety only occurs on position [12] of the first and second printings, so very few examples are possible. Only three mint and four used examples have so far been recorded. One of the mint examples is in the Royal Collection (in a multiple with stamps bearing the Chinese handstamp). Note that the three mint, wide "10" offered in sales over the past fifteen years have been the mark II variety from position [7]
