Hong Kong 1891 Surcharges With 1897 (1 Sep.) printed envelope to New York by the ´Empress of India´, just tied by Hong Kong c.d.s. with two New York arrival c.d.s. (27/9) on reverse; somewhat soiled and reduced at right, nevertheless an extremely rare franking and considered to be the latest date of use of this surcharge stamp. Photo Estimate HK$ 7,000-9,000 The discovery of the $1 on 10c. postal forgery caused the rapid withdrawal of the $1 on 96c. purple on red. A temporary replacement was made by overprinting supplies of the $2 Postal Fiscal, "One Dollar". Philatelists have always believed that the $1 on 96c. was withdrawn in September 1897. There has been recent debate about the issue date of the new provisional surcharge. It is fair to assume that the postal authorities would have been very vigilant about the use of the $1 on 96c. once the replacement was available. This cover demonstrates that the $1 on 96c. was still accepted at the beginning of September, so the $1 on $2 would have been issued around this date Richard Gurevitch records only five items bearing this stamp, 3 covers and two fragmants.
