Maritime Wreck Covers of the World South America 1938 (Nov.) S.S. "Uruguay", fire in No. 2 hold between Buenos Aires and New York on or about 13 November, controlled, completely extinguished at Santos on 15 November, envelope (stamps floated off) from Buenos Aires to California showing "Received in Bad Condition/G.P.O. N.Y. (D.M.)" cachet in violet and forwarded in New York Post Office Department "ambulance" envelope accompanied by typed label inscribed "It is regretted that these letters were damaged by/Sea-water following a fire on the vessel in which/they were being transported". rare with very few items recorded from this wreck.
