Maritime Wreck Covers of the World South America 1865 (27 Feb.) S.S. "Bearn", caught in a storm and stranded a mile off shore some 47 miles south of Bahia, entire letter dated 22 February from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, bearing 1854 280r. red with good to large margins and neatly cancelled and tied by oval of bars, showing despatch c.d.s., boxed "p.d." and a fine strike of the "brésil/2/calais" French entry c.d.s. (7 .4). A rare item of maritime mail from Brazil and one of only two surviving items of mail from this wreck.
