Maritime Wreck Covers of the World North America 1912 (15 Apr.) S.S. Titanic", collided with iceburg during her maiden voyage and sunk, U.S. Government imprinted facing slip with printed heading "Philadelphia, Pa. From Sea Post No. 2(manuscript) Letters and showing "titanic" h.s. followed by "transatlantic post office/7" c.d.s. for 10 April and with "o.s. woody" h.s. below; fine and very rare. Photo Estimate £ 7,000-8,000Note: Facing slips were commonly used by postal clerks after sorting the mails in order to identify a particular packet of mails, city of destination, etc. Oscar Scott Woody , mail clerk on the Titanic, prepared a quantity of facing slips in advance of sorting the mails. When the ship sank he placed a number of the facing slips, as well as his letter of assignment, in a mail pouch and strapped it to him. He was later found dead on an iceburg with the mail pouch on him
