(CP.15/22; MI.139/98), extremely fine and extremely rare  Estimate £   200-250provenance:  Glendining 21 March 1990, lot 268   Probably one of an incomplete series of medals in cast bronze intended to be a series of the monarchs of Scotland, produced in the early 19th century.  Cochran Patrick, p.16, knew of only one specimen, that in his collection and sold Sotheby 8 November 1949, lot 24 (part) to Spink; the piece now offered appears to be a slightly sharper casting, also bearing the inscription EX. MON. WEST (in Westminster Abbey).  The portrait on the medal was taken from the recumbent figure on her tomb in Westminster Abbey, hence EX. MON.
