x James VI, gold Twenty Pound piece, 1575, 30.53g., half length figure of the young king to right with branch in left and sword in right hand, cartouche after SCOTOR, panel with IN VTRVNQUE. PARATVS.1575. below, rev. crowned shield, PARCERE SUBJECTIS & DEBELLARE SUPERBOS around (B. 1, fig. 947 var.; St. 186; S. 5451), light surface scratches on both sides, small file mark on edge at 6 o´clock on reverse, a very handsome example of this magnificent type coin, struck on a full flan, with a detailed and attractive portrait, good very fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 30,000-40,000provenance: DNW, 26 November 1997, lot 214 The Scottish Twenty Pound piece of James VI is the heaviest hammered gold coin ever struck in the British Isles. Struck to the standard of one Scottish ounce, it is approximately 12% heavier than the famous Oxford Triple Unite of Charles I.
There are believed to be seven examples of each of the two known dates, 1575 and 1576, in private hands.
