Siege of Vienna 1685, Count Ernst Rüdiger Starhemberg, bronze medal by Philipp Müller, 48mm., armoured bust right, signed P.H.M. on truncation, rev. a captive Turk amid military trophies, legend in six lines above begins WIEN 60 TAGE, good very fine, rare Estimate £ 150-200Both obverse and reverse are based on the more frequently seen medal by Hans Jacob Wolrab. The portrait by Wolrab was copied on many medals and smaller medalets. Graf Starhemberg, military commander of Vienna, led the city garrison in the heroic and ultimately successful defence against the large Turkish armies under the command of the grand vizier Kara Mustafa.
