Brazil, countermarked silver 960-Reis of Joao VI, 1820 B, obverse countermarked with IGO (the G reversed) in an oblong (for countermark see Russo 281-283), very fine, interesting Estimate £ 50-80At the end of the reign of the Emperor Peter I (1822-31) a revolutionary outbreak took place in the province of Ceará in the region of the small town of Icó. Between 1829 and 1832 this countermark was used on copper coins of 20-, 40-, and 80-Reis. This appears to be a contemporary use of this countermark on a silver coin, which is unusual.
