Queen´s South Africa 1899-1902, three clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, South Africa 1902 (Capt: & Qr: Master J.M. Byrne. Durham Lt. Infy.), extremely fine, together with eight photographs of the recipient, one of the recipient´s brother, and copied extracts from the Sunderland Daily Echo containing the recipient´s obituary, and funeral report. Estimate £ 180-220Quartermaster Major Joseph Magee Byrne (1851-1926), born Dublin; enlisted 1st Battalion 68th Foot as 810 Private 1865; after 20 years in the ranks serving in India appointed Quartermaster in succession to his brother 1885; Promoted Quartermaster and Honorary Captain 1899; left for South Africa 11.1.1900, returning to England after six months to assist in the formation of a new Regiment; returned to South Africa as Railway Staff Officer covering operations in the Orange River Colony and Cape Colony February-May 1902; returned to England October 1902. Appointed Quartermaster and Honorary Major 1.1.1903; retired from active service 10.5.1905; took up the post of Recruiting Officer; in August 1915 was involved in the raising of the 20th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry (Wearside); retired 1920 after 55 years´ service.
