Wyon Sr., 38mm,, obverse, Religion, holding a portrait of Nelson, seated beside a lion and a harp, in front of a pyramid, reverse, shield and anchor, NOV. 29 LAUS DEO 1798 on a riband, the Eye of Providence above (BHM.450; MH.484; S.N/3), very fine, toned, extremely rare Estimate £ 200-250This medal, previously thought to relate to the Battle of the Nile, is a Thanksgiving Medal on the triumphant entry of Ferdinand IV into Rome, 29 November 1798, an event made possible by the withdrawal of the French after the British successes in Egypt. The motto IN HOC SIGNO VINCES alludes to the vision of Constantine before his victory and triumphant entry into Rome. The date is also the day on which Ferdinand declared war on France (see BHM vol III, p.233 and p.277).
