Lloyd´s Medal for Meritorious Services, Third Circular Type 1913-36, Silver (Captain Thomas McMullan, S.S. "Lackawanna" 16th. August 1918), good very fine Estimate £ 300-320On 16th August 1918 the 4,125 ton S.S. Lackawanna, under the command of Captain Thomas McMullan, was attacked by a German U-Boat whilst sailing east out of New York. The submarine first fired two torpedoes, which were skilfully avoided by the captain, and then attacked the steamship with her deck gun. McMullan returned fire, managing to hold the submarine at bay long enough to make good his escape. This was Captain McMullan´s second of three clashes with the Kreigsmarine. The Lackawanna was first attacked on the 13th February 1918 when she was torpedoed while crossing the North Sea; and again, this time in the Irish Sea, on 20th September 1918. In both cases Captain McMullan was able to bring her safely home to port.
