Coronation (Mayors and Provosts) 1902 (Alderman J.G. Thomas. Mayor.), about extremely fine, with silver riband bar engraved ´Abergavenny.´ Estimate £ 150-180Alderman John Gearing Thomas, Mayor of Abergavenny, created Alderman 1899; elected Mayor for the Coronation year 9.11.1901. Abergavenny received its first Charter from the Earl of Marches in 1639, and a Royal Charter from Charles II in 1657. In 1902 the town covered 830 acres and its population stood at around 9,000.
