Cardinal Henry IX, silver medal 1788, signed by G. Hamerani, 53 mm, bust right wearing cape and beretta, rev. Religion standing, the British Lion in mourning at her feet, St Peter´s in the distance (BHM.282; Woolfe 73, 3a), struck from rusty dies, very fine; and a similar medal in copper (Woolfe 73, 1a), very fine (2) Estimate £ 80-100This medal, produced soon after the death of Charles Edward Stuart (Charles III), is signed G HAM F on the truncation, presumably for Giovanni or Gioacchimo Hamerani. However the style is closer to Tomasso Mercandetti who worked in the Hamerani workshop. Woolf notes ´copies of this medal, and others of important persons, continued to be struck and sold in Rome as souvenirs until quite late in the 19th century. Many specimens were struck from rusty dies.´
