Victoria, Pattern Palladium Half-Sovereign, 1869, young head left, rev. palladium hydrogenium around graham (Montagu Collection, Volume II, Spink, October 1890, lot 1829; Murdoch Collection, Part 3, Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, March 14-19, 1904, lot 542A), some light surface marks, otherwise extremely fine, exceedingly rare Estimate £ 1,800-2,200 Pattern Half-Sovereign or Trial Piece, struck in Palladium-Hydrogen, 1869, by Mr. Graham, then Master of the Mint. This extraordinary piece is said to contain 900 times its volume in hydrogen. Probably unique.´
