India, Vijayanagar (c.1342-1565), AV Ramatanka, 43.66g, central Deccan, Vishnu (or his avatara Rama) enthroned on platform surrounded by attendants, Hanuman and Sugriva kneel below touching his feet in obeisance, rev. Hanuman standing within ornamental frame, Kannada letters within partitions, somewhat double struck, especially on obverse, fine / about fine, Ramatankas of this size extremely rare Estimate £ 500-600provenance: Previously the property of the late Dr. H.W. McCaully Hayes, acting superintendant at the govenment lunatic asylum at Madras. It was bought back to England by his wife c.1930. This is a particularly large and early example of the series of Ramatanka tokens used for worship at Hindu temples. They were first recorded in the early 14th century by the then master of the Delhi mint.
