A Georgian Militia Officer´s Epaulettes A pair of epaulettes of the West Yorks Local Militia, plain gold check lace straps with gilt buttons inscribed WY/ST ET OS/ LM, "corded Enniskillen" edging to straps and crescents, and a double row of loose bullions, yellow silk lining See illustration Note: The initials ST ET OS on the buttons are an abbreviation for Staincross and Osgold, one of thirteen battalions of Local Militia formed in West Yorkshire during the Napoleonic Wars. The unit was raised in 1808 by Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Francis Lindley-Wood and was based in Mark Bretton. Unlike the County Militia units, the Local Militias, who were largely formed from the existing Volunteers, had no liability to serve outside their own local area. They were reduced to cadre strength in 1816 and finally disbanded in the mid-1820s. The author is much indebted to Mr Philip Haythornthwaite, who kindly supplied this information. Estimate £ 300-400
