An Officer´s Shoulderbelt-Plate of the 59th (2nd Nottinghamshire) Regiment A burnished gilt plate, c1826 - 1846, the Crown, laurel wreath, Regimental number and battle-honour scrolls all in white metal, similar to Parkyn Fig 257, but with the addition (noted on Page 168) of the honour BHURTPORE beneath the regimental number), the reverse complete with its leather liner impressed with initials JPM See illustration Note: The initials are those of James Pierce Maxwell, sixth son of the Rev Henry Maxwell and Lady Anne Butler, born 1813, Ensign 59th Foot 1834, Lieutenant 1837, Captain 1841; exchanged into the 50th Foot 1851 and fought with them at the battle of the Alma and siege of Sebastopol 1854 - 55, being severely wounded in the head by a round-shot in the trenches before Sebastopol in October 1854; brevet-Major June 1854, brevet-Lieutenant Colonel December 1854; Crimean War Medal with two clasps, 5th Class of the Order of the Medjidie and Turkish Crimean Medal. Transferred to half-pay 1855 and retired by sale shortly thereafter. His father became 6th Baron Farnham, Co Cavan, in 1838, and Maxwell, who was MP for Co. Cavan from 1843-65, eventually succeeded his elder surviving brother as 9th Baron in 1884. He died unmarried in 1896. Estimate £ 500-700
