(1902-86), second son of the 4th Marquess of Salisbury, K.G., G.C.V.O., and grandson of the former Prime Minister; Educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford; Fellow of New College, Oxford 1939-69; Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery 1937-51; Goldsmiths´ Professor of English Literature, University of Oxford 1948-69; Appointed Member of the Companions of Honour 1.1.1949. Among his many publications are Men of the R.A.F. (1962) and his celebrated two volume biography of Viscount Melbourne, Queen Victoria´s first Prime Minister, The Young Melbourne (1939) and Lord M. (1954).
