Don Inigo d´Avalos, Grand Chamberlain to Alfonso, King of Naples from 1442, bronze portrait medal, c.1449, by Antonio Pisano (Pisanello, c.1395-1455), don· inigo· de· davalos·, bust right, wearing a broad brimmed hat with detail of the fur picked out, rev. opvs· pisani· pictoris·, a landscape of sea, earth and sky within a sphere, arms of Avalos above, *pervvi sefa* below, 81mm. (Armand 1, 2/1; Pollard, Bargello 19; Currency of Fame 9; Hill Corpus 44; Kress 22; Syson/Gordon 3-45a, b), a good quality, though later cast, on a thin flan, good very fine, with pleasant patination Estimate £ 1,500-2,000PROVENANCE: Glendining, 10 June 1987, lot 255 Another example of this medal with the details of the fur on the brim of the hat picked out in a similar manner was sold in the Oppenheimer Collection (Christie´s London 27 July 1936, lot 6). The medal also featured on the front cover of The Art of the Medal by Mark Jones (illustration 53a and b). Jones also illustrates the original drawing for the reverse design (illustration 54)
