Canada 1866 (16 June) unstamped envelope from Innerkip, U.C. to "Private James Robertson, No. 9 Company, Queen´s Own Rifles, Stratford", showing circular undated despatch handstamp with manuscript date inserted and "paid" handstamp followed by manuscript "2cts", the reverse with London, Woodstock and Stratford datestamps. A rare cover written during the Fenian Raids and unusually prepaid 2 cents in cash Estimate US$ 1,200-1,500Note: 800 Fenians crossed the Niagara River from the U.S.A. on 1st June 1866. The next day a force of Canadian Militia, including the Queen´s Own Rifles, was ordered to march to Ridgeway and Stevensville. On leaving Ridgeway, the Queen´s No. 9 or University Company came under heavy Fenian gunfire, losing many men killed or wounded. After the Battle of Ridgeway the regiment moved to Stratford from where this letter was written.
