Queen´s South Africa 1899-1902, two clasps, Relief of Ladysmith, Belfast (2895 Pte. F. Pilkington. Manch: Regt.), minor edge bruise, otherwise nearly extremely fine Estimate £ 180-2202895 Private F. Pilkington, served with the 1st Battalion Manchester Regiment, and was severely wounded at Bergendal, 27.8.1900. Bergendal was a farm and a station on the main Pretoria-Delagoa railway line in the Belfast district of the South African Republic. On the 27th August 1900, after an intense bombardment on the koppie, an assault against the position was led by Lieutenant-Colonel C.T.E. Metcalfe, 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade. Despite intense resistance the position was carried, with the Boers suffering 67 killed, and the British 13 killed and 107 wounded. Private E. Durrant, 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade, was awarded the Victoria Cross for rescuing a wounded soldier under fire at this action.
