East and West Africa 1887-1900, one clasp, Sierra Leone 1898-99 (Lt. E.T.F. Sandys, 1/ W.I.R.), very fine Estimate £ 400-450D.S.O. London Gazette 22.9.1916 Major (Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel E.T.F. Sandys Middlesex Regiment ´For conspicuous gallantry when leading his battalion and keeping its direction during an attack under very heavy fire. Although wounded in several places, he continued to lead it until further wounds made it no longer possible to do so. The fine behaviour of the battalion was largely due to the Commanding Officer´s personal qualities.´ Lieutenant-Colonel Edwin Thomas Falkiner, D.S.O., born 1876; Second Lieutenant 1st Battalion West India Regiment, 1896; Lieutenant 1897; served in Sierra Leone with the Karene Expedition 1898-99; Adjutant 13.6.1900-12.6.1904; Captain 5.11.1900; transferred Captain Middlesex Regiment, 25.3.1905; Major 2nd Battalion, September 1915 (M.I.D. 22.9.1916); died of wounds 13.9.1916, and is buried in Brompton Cemetery, London.
