India General Service 1854-95, one clasp, Pegu (Geoe. P. Martin. Secy. "Hastings"), together with The Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Civil Division, Companion´s (C.B.) breast Badge, silver-gilt (Hallmarks for London 1902), about extremely fine, the badge converted for neck wear and with neck riband (2) Estimate £ 400-450C.B. London Gazette 26.6.1902 George Peter Martin, C.B., (1823-1910), born Stoke Damerel, Devon; entered Royal Navy 1840; Promoted Paymaster for special service in the settlement of the San Juan de Nicaragua dispute 1848, qualifying as Secretary to Flag Officers and Commodores. Served in H.M.S. Hastings from 19.1.1850 to 24.12.1852, under Commodore George Lambert; present at the bombardment of Petropolovski 1852. Boats from Hastings and other ships of the Squadron assisted in the capture of Prome 9.10.1852. Secretary to the Commanders-in-Chief at Queenstown, the Mediterranean, the Nore, and at Devonport; while Fleet-Paymaster in the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert 1867-75 served on the Admiralty Committee of Ships´ Books, and several other Admiralty Committees. Qualified Barrister-at-Law 1872; Deputy Judge Advocate to the Fleet 1875-1902. Created C.B. in the Coronation Honours of Edward VII 1902. George Martin was an enthusiastic cyclist from the time that bicycles were introduced into England. He was firmly of the opinion that the bicycle (and in later years the tricycle) was the principle cause of the remarkable health with which he was favoured (Who´s Who refers)
