William Francis M.C., V.D. ´For Services in the East´ M.C. London Gazette 4.10.1919 T/Lt. William Francis Hannin, 6th Bn., R. Dub. Fus. ´During the mopping up of Le Cateau, on the 17th October, 1918, when scouts had failed to get in touch with platoons working in the opposite direction, he went forward himself under heavy machine-gun fire for the purpose. He also skilfully selected tactical points for his platoon with complete success. He set a fine example to his men by his utter disregard of personal safety, and was always ahead of his platoon in action.´ Colonel William Francis Hannin C.B.E., M.C., V.D. (1887-1947), a native of Banagher, Offaly, Ireland; he went to Ceylon in 1905 as an Engineer for a Belfast firm; served during the Great War with the Ceylon Tea Planters´ Rifles on the Suez Canal and then Gallipoli; commissioned Temporary Lieutenant 6th (Service) Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, 25.7.1916; served in Palestine and on the Western Front; post the Great War returned to service in the Ceylon Tea Planters´ Rifles; advanced Lieutenant-Colonel Officer Commanding 13.5.1933; retired Colonel 1936; returned to Ireland and during the Second War was Group Warden A.R.P. for Number 7 Area Ballsbridge. His obituary states that he was recommended for the Victoria Cross.
