Transferred to the Indian Staff Corps 3.5.1892, and posted to the 16th Cavalry, later the 16th Bengal Lancers. Lieutenant Holman served in Burma with the Wuntho Expedition, where he was slightly wounded, and Mentioned in Despatches, and as a Staff Officer took part in the operations of the Irrawaddy Column. Promoted Captain, Indian Army 21.9.1900, and served in China with the Chinese Expeditionary Force in the allied suppression of the Boxers, as First Class Officer Interpreter (in Russian and French) and Special Service Officer, graded as D.A.A.G.; was Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the D.S.O. Served as Assistant Secretary, Military Department, Government of India 27.5 - 14.8.1901; Staff Captain, Intelligence Department, War Office 29.12.1902 - 20.1.1904; D.A.Q.M.G., General Staff, 21.1.1904 - 28.12.1906. He returned to India, served at Army Headquarters 11.3 - 21.10.1910, and from 1.7.1913; At the outbreak of the Great War, Major Holman took up a Special Appointment in France 12.10.1914 - 29.1.1915; and served as Assistant Quartermaster-General 30.1 - 3.11.1915, an appointment which saw him promoted Lieutenant-Colonel 21.9.1915. Appointed Deputy Assistant and Quartermaster-General 4.11.1915 - 31.3.1919, with the temporary ranks of Brigadier-General 4.11.1915 - 12.11.1916 and Major-General 13.11.1916-31.12.1918. Promoted Major-General 1.1.1919. Major-General Holman served as Chief of the British Military Mission to South Russia 22.5.1919 - 15.4.1920, for which work he was appointed K.C.B., and received the Orders of St. Anne and St. Stanislaus 1st Class with Swords. Served in India as Deputy Quartermaster General, 7.2.1921 - 26.12.1922; General Officer Commanding Sind-Rajputana District 1922-24; Mhow District 1924-27. Promoted Lieutenant-Colonel 1926; Retired 1928. During the Second World War Lieutenant-General Holman served in the Home Guard, 3.6.1940-18.2.1943. Lieutenant-General Holman´s sword from Sandhurst was broken the day he was awarded it tent-pegging.
