An Original H.M.A.S. Sydney S.M.S. Emden Medal, ´Emden Dollar´, Mexican Dollar in silver, 63mm, set in a mount by W. Kerr, Sydney, with a crown and integral ring, bands worded ´H.M.A.S.-Sydney-S.M.S.-Emden Nov 9 1914´, very fine, scarce, a number of copies are known Estimate £ 250-350In the early stages of the Great War, the Australian cruiser Sydney located the German light cruiser Emden in the Cocos Islands off south-west Sumatra. After a short action the German ship was boarded, and a quantity of Mexican dollars were found. A number were mounted as medals by W. Kerr of Sydney and given to the crew to commemorate the engagement, whilst others were sold to members of the public.
