Royal Humane Society, bronze, successful (M. Dillon. R.I.C. Nov: 12.1901), small corroded mark in obverse field, therefore very fine, with Royal Irish Constabulary helmet badge, five buttons and two metal shoulder badges (9) Estimate £ 240-280Constable M. Dillon, Royal Irish Constabulary, Royal Humane Society Medal awarded for, ´Owing to a rainstorm lasting for 21 hours the low lying parts round Mountmellick became flooded and the Constables who had already rescued several persons in the village heard that Mrs. Kane was in danger. The distance traversed was 2 miles the water being from 1 to 3 feet deep. When nearing the cottage a pathway 3 feet wide on which the depth was 5 feet and 12 feet on either side. The Segt. and Constable Dillon were both swept away but managed at great risk to save themselves but eventually Mrs. Kane and her children were all got out in safety and this after being shut up in her house for 6 hours.´ A total of five bronze medals were awarded for this incident: Sergeant P. Fitzsimmons; Constable P. Bourke; Constable M. Dillon; William Bailey; John McEroy.
