South Africa, ZAR, President Paul Kruger, Veldpond, 1902, script monogram zar over date, rev. script een pond, in blank fields, crudely struck; variety with dash over the z (F.4; H.Z54; KM.11), almost as struck, believed to be one of the finest known specimens, especially rare thus Estimate £ 9,000-11,000provenance; Gordon collection, Phoenix, 17 November 1979, lot SGA164 (a copy of this catalogue accompanies the lot). A rare siege issue of the Boer War, the Veldpond was struck at the Transvaal Gold Mining Estate´s workshop at Pilgrim´s Rest . It was authorised by acting president Schalk Burger, and struck by hand from dies produced by P. J. Kloppers. Only 986 pieces struck.
